Lake Shikotsu Day Trip from Sapporo: A Local’s Honest Guide (Summer Focus)

Day Trips & Beyond

Hey there! Welcome to Sapporo!

So, you’re considering a day trip from Sapporo to Lake Shikotsu (Shikotsuko)? That’s a popular choice, and for good reason. As a Sapporo local, let me share some information and a bit of real talk from my perspective to help you make the most of it.

Why Visit Lake Shikotsu, Especially in Summer?

  1. Incredible Water Clarity (Formerly #1 in Japan!) Summer is when Lake Shikotsu truly shines. You might not know this, but Lake Shikotsu was ranked #1 for water quality in Japan by the Ministry of the Environment for many years running. While it might trade places occasionally now, its transparency is still exceptional. Under the summer sun, the clear “Shikotsu Blue” water looks almost unreal, like you can see straight to the bottom. It’s a view you won’t easily forget and worth seeing firsthand.
  2. A Pleasant Drive Through Greenery The drive down National Route 453 from Sapporo is quite pleasant in the summer. As you get closer, the trees on both sides form what feels like a “green tunnel.” Driving with the windows down brings in a refreshing breeze scented with the forest – it’s quite revitalizing. The scenery along the way is definitely part of the summer Lake Shikotsu experience.
  3. Personal Recommendation: SUP is a Fantastic Summer Experience! One activity I personally love here is SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding). Hokkaido summers can get surprisingly hot these days, and that’s when SUP on Lake Shikotsu feels amazing. There’s nothing quite like paddling on that stunningly clear water, and honestly, jumping in for a swim when you feel like it is part of the fun! It’s incredibly refreshing to just enjoy the beautiful scenery without worrying too much about falling in. In fact, my girlfriend loves it so much she asks me to take her every year, and we’re planning to go again soon. It really is that special here. There are beginner tours available too, so definitely consider it if you’re curious.
  4. Great Season for Outdoor Activities Summer in Hokkaido generally means comfortable, less humid weather. The breeze off the lake makes it ideal for enjoying the outdoors – whether it’s paddling, cycling, or just walking along the shore.

What About Winter at Lake Shikotsu? (A Local’s Honest Take)

You might see guides promoting Lake Shikotsu in winter. While the snowscape is undoubtedly beautiful, my honest local opinion? It gets incredibly cold. Seriously cold. The wind off the lake can be brutal, and temperatures are often well below freezing. Driving can also be tricky with potentially icy roads. While pretty, the activities are more limited.

The Winter Exception? The Ice Festival The main winter draw is the “Chitose-Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival” (Hyoto Matsuri). They create ice sculptures using lake water, which are lit up at night… apparently, it’s quite magical. Full disclosure here… I’ve actually never been (haha). As a Sapporo local, I feel a bit bad admitting that, so I looked up some reviews (in Japanese) online for you! In summary: People rave about the beautiful ice sculptures, especially when illuminated, and fun features like ice slides. However, everyone agrees it’s freezing cold, the ground is very slippery (wear proper winter boots!), and it gets extremely crowded, especially on weekend evenings. Access and parking can also be challenging. So, if you decide to brave the Ice Festival, go fully prepared for the cold and crowds. Personally? I still recommend summer!

Getting There

  • Rental Car: Offers the most flexibility. The drive from Sapporo city center takes a little over an hour, depending on traffic.
    • Parking Note: Summer weekends can get busy. For context, I drove there myself this April (2025), and the main parking lot was practically empty! It definitely varies by season.
  • Bus: From JR Chitose Station, it’s about a 45-minute bus ride to the Lake Shikotsu bus terminal (Shikotsuko Onsen area). A common route is taking the JR train from Sapporo to Chitose Station, then catching the bus. There might be other bus options directly from Sapporo (possibly with transfers), but check the latest timetables carefully as services can be infrequent.

Things to Do in Summer at Lake Shikotsu

  1. SUP, Canoeing, Kayaking: The best way to experience that amazing water clarity. Rentals and tours are available.
  2. Relax by the Lake: Walk along the shore, enjoy the views from a lakeside cafe. The view of Mt. Eniwa from the Poropinai area is a classic photo spot.
  3. Nature Walks: Explore trails like the “Wild Bird Forest” (Yacho no Mori) or visit the nearby Moss Canyon (Koke no Domon) for some refreshing forest bathing (Shinrinyoku).
  4. Soak in an Onsen (Hot Spring) – Marukoma Onsen is Recommended! An onsen soak is great even after summer activities! There are several places offering day-use bathing (higaeri nyuyoku) in the Shikotsuko Onsen area. For a special experience, check out Marukoma Onsen Ryokan. Locals know it as a high-quality, somewhat traditional inn. Staying overnight might be a splurge, but you can use their baths as a day visitor for ¥1,200 for adults and ¥600 for children! (Always best to check their official site for current prices). I’ve been there, and honestly, their outdoor bath (rotenburo) connected to the lake is quite memorable. It’s right by the shore, separated only by rocks, giving you an incredible feeling of soaking right in nature. Highly recommended. They have an English website: https://www.marukoma.co.jp/english/ Of course, if your budget allows, staying overnight would be a fantastic experience too.
  5. Enjoy Simple Treats from Lakeside Shops There are a few small shops (baiten) and food stands by the lake, which are quite nice. Enjoying a coffee, soft-serve ice cream, or a light snack while looking out at the sparkling lake on a sunny day… doesn’t that feel like a simple luxury? It’s a great way to relax and forget the everyday hustle. [A Plea from a Local!] When you enjoy places like this, please, please make sure to dispose of your trash properly. Let’s all work together to keep this beautiful scenery clean! Also, because the scenery is so nice here, it’s a good spot for a driving break or lunch if you happen to be heading towards Lake Toya or Niseko. Just something handy to keep in mind.
  6. Try Hime Salmon (Chip) if You See It A local specialty is “Hime-masu,” which locals often call “Chip” (pronounced ‘chippu’). It’s really quite delicious! It’s basically Kokanee salmon, a type of landlocked sockeye. It has a firm texture and delicate flavor, often served grilled with salt (shioyaki) or fried. If you like salmon, I think you’ll definitely enjoy it. I remember eating it with colleagues about 10 years ago, and as a salmon lover, I thought it was fantastic! If you see it on a menu at a restaurant, give it a try.

Detours On the Way

  • Along Route 453: You’ll pass some nice cafes and restaurants, plus the Sapporo Art Park closer to the city.
  • Near Chitose: The Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Station) Salmon Park Chitose is an option if you’re passing through that area.

A Few Summer Tips from a Local

  • Bring Layers: Even in summer, it can be cooler by the lake, especially in the evenings or if it’s windy.
  • Sun Protection: Essential! The sun reflecting off the lake can be strong. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Bug Spray: Might be useful, especially if you’re walking in wooded areas.
  • Book Ahead: For popular activities or accommodation during peak season (July/August), booking in advance is wise.

In Summary: Lake Shikotsu is a Beautiful Nature Escape
