Hey everyone, and welcome to Sapporo!
Having lived in Sapporo for 40 years, I’m here to share some insider tips with all of you visiting from overseas on how to enjoy Sapporo even on rainy or snowy days. It can be a bummer when the weather isn’t on your side during your trip, but actually, Sapporo has its own unique charms that shine brightest on days like these. I’ll introduce some special ways to spend your time from a local’s perspective, things you might not find in your average guidebook. I hope you find this helpful!
No Worries About Rain or Snow! Sapporo’s Underground is Like a Secret Base
You know, Sapporo’s underground network is pretty amazing. Especially around Sapporo Station, a vast network of underground passages connects JR Tower, the subway stations, and even extends towards Odori Park and Susukino.
- Chikaho (Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway), Aurora Town, and Pole Town Strolling through these underground malls, you can enjoy shopping and dining without getting wet from rain or snow. They’re directly connected to Sapporo Station, and the Chikaho, Aurora Town, and Pole Town network is incredibly convenient. With so many different shops, time might just fly by as you browse. However, on weekends or when there are big events, it can get a bit crowded. But hey, that also means it’s lively, and people-watching can be fun too! Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or want to taste some Hokkaido sweets, the possibilities are endless.
Have a Blast at All-Weather Facilities! Learning and Entertainment Covered
Sapporo has plenty of indoor facilities too. One area I particularly recommend, though it’s a little ways out, is Shin-Sapporo.
- Shin-Sapporo Area: The Golden Duo of an Aquarium and Science Center Shin-Sapporo is easily accessible by both JR train and subway. It’s a hub for spots popular with families and couples alike.
- Sunpiazza Aquarium (Sunpiazza Aquarium) It’s a cozy aquarium, but you’re sure to be charmed by the adorable otters and the fish swimming in the large circular tank. The penguin walks (seasonal) are popular too. Please check their official website for admission fees and event times before you go. (It seems their official website is in Japanese only, so you might want to use your browser’s translation feature.)
- Sapporo Science Center (Sapporo Science Center) Right next to the aquarium is this science center. You might think it’s just for kids, but there are plenty of fascinating exhibits that will make adults go “Wow!” too. The planetarium is especially recommended for its impressive and romantic atmosphere. Please note that admission fees and exhibit details are current as of when this article was written, so be sure to check the official website for the latest information.
Stay Dry and Enjoy! Local Experiences at Tanukikoji Shopping Street
Strolling through an old-fashioned shopping arcade is one of the true joys of traveling, don’t you think? Sapporo has an arcade street where you can have fun even on rainy or snowy days.
- Tanukikoji Shopping Street (Tanukikoji Shopping Street) Tanukikoji Shopping Street is one of Sapporo’s oldest shopping arcades, with a history spanning nearly 150 years. The arcade stretches for about 900 meters, so you can take your time Browse the shops without worrying about the weather. It runs from 1-chome to 7-chome, each block having its own unique character. You’ll find souvenir shops, drugstores, and plenty of restaurants. You can savor Hokkaido gourmet like Genghis Khan (grilled mutton), ramen, and seafood rice bowls here. There are also some slightly more “underground” izakayas, giving you a bit of an adventure. Some might get the impression that it’s mostly for tourists, but you’ll also find shops that locals frequent and unique select shops hidden away. Discovering these places is part of the fun of exploring Tanukikoji.
How About an Arty Day? Cultural Facilities to Enrich Your Soul
Immersing yourself in art or listening to music can be a luxurious way to spend a rainy or snowy day.
- Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art (Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art) Here you can appreciate works by artists associated with Hokkaido, as well as modern and contemporary art from Japan and abroad. It’s a calm atmosphere where you can leisurely enjoy some art.
- Sapporo Art Park (Sapporo Art Park) It’s a bit in the suburbs, but this art museum is located within a nature-rich park. It’s famous for its outdoor sculptures, but of course, the indoor exhibitions are substantial too. On rainy or snowy days, focusing on the indoor works is recommended.
- Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara (Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara) This concert hall is renowned for its beautiful acoustics. If there’s a performance that interests you during your stay, I highly recommend checking it out. You might have an amazing musical experience. Of course, art museums and concert halls might seem a bit boring to those who aren’t particularly interested. But it’s a good opportunity to experience Sapporo’s cultural side, and you might encounter an unexpectedly wonderful piece or performance.
Warm Up Your Chilled Body to the Core! Refresh at an Onsen
When you think of Hokkaido, you think of onsen (hot springs)! There are onsen in and around Sapporo city that you can enjoy on a day trip.
- Jozankei Onsen (Jozankei Onsen) Known as Sapporo’s “Okuzashiki” (inner parlor hot spring resort), it’s about an hour’s bus ride from the city center. For more detailed information, access, and recommended day-trip onsen, you can also refer to this Jozankei Onsen Guide. Many hotels and ryokans offer day-use bathing. An open-air bath while gazing at a snowy landscape is simply the best. Please note that fees and operating hours vary by facility, so be sure to check the latest information in advance.
- Public Baths (Sento) and Super Sento in the City If you want to enjoy the onsen feeling more casually, public baths and super sento in the city are also recommended. Many have extensive sauna facilities, making them perfect for soothing travel fatigue. It might take a bit of time to get to an onsen area, and it can feel a bit rushed, especially for a day trip. But that feeling of openness and the warmth that seeps into your core is truly special. A Local’s Honest Take ②: Especially an open-air bath on a snowy day, it’s an indescribably wonderful feeling. Your head is cool, but your body is warm, and you feel almost one with the snow. This is a charm you really have to experience to understand. Recently, more day-trip onsen facilities with good quality spring water have opened in Sapporo city, so it’s become easier to enjoy that wonderful feeling without having to travel far.
Getting Around on Rainy or Snowy Days: What to Do?
For getting around Sapporo city, the subway is very convenient. It’s less affected by snow and runs frequently, so you can rely on it. You can check route maps and timetables on the Sapporo City Transportation Bureau’s website. Be really careful when walking on Sapporo’s streets in winter, as they can be very slippery with snow and ice! Especially at crosswalks and around bus stops. Wearing slip-resistant shoes is a must. For tips on how to walk on winter roads, I’ve shared more details in this Sapporo Winter Walking Guide, so please give it a read.
