Sapporo Station: A Local’s Insider Guide to Hokkaido’s Travel Hub & More!

English guide

Hey there! Welcome to Sapporo! As a guy who’s lived in Sapporo for 40 years, this time I’m going to tell you all about the charms of Sapporo Station – it’s not just Sapporo’s gateway, but a major tourist spot in itself. I’ll be sharing some local insights you won’t find in guidebooks, so I’m pretty sure this will make your Sapporo trip even more enjoyable.

You know, if you think Sapporo Station is just a place to catch a train, you’re seriously mistaken. It’s not only a convenient starting point for your Hokkaido adventures, but it’s also a place where you can enjoy shopping, dining, and even take in panoramic views of Sapporo. It’s truly like a “city within a city.”

Sapporo Station: Your Gateway to Hokkaido Adventures! Let’s Cover the Basics

Sapporo Station isn’t connected to the Hokkaido Shinkansen (bullet train) just yet (that’s planned for the end of fiscal 2030 – a bit too far off, huh? Haha), but it’s undeniably the heart of Hokkaido’s transportation network, with JR limited express trains frequently departing for various parts of Hokkaido. Access is outstanding, with the JR Rapid Airport train getting you here from New Chitose Airport in about 37 minutes (this is based on information at the time of writing, so please be sure to check the official website yourself for the latest details).

There are also subway stations for the Namboku and Toho lines, giving you easy access to major spots within the city. Plenty of buses depart from the surrounding area too, making it convenient for reaching those slightly more off-the-beaten-path locations.

A Local’s Honest Take: You know, Sapporo Station also has an incredibly extensive underground network. The underground passages connecting to Apia and Stellar Place let you move around without getting wet on rainy or snowy days, and they’re lined with so many shops that it’s fun just to walk through. Many people do most of their shopping here, so you’ll see not only commuters and students but also plenty of folks, like local homemakers and mothers, out enjoying some retail therapy. However, it can get pretty crowded, especially on weekend afternoons, so it might be a good idea to give yourself some extra time. But hey, that’s also part of experiencing Sapporo’s vibrant atmosphere.

Shop ‘til You Drop at Sapporo Station!

Directly connected to Sapporo Station is JR Tower, which houses the Daimaru Sapporo department store and massive shopping malls like Sapporo Stellar Place and Paseo (partially closed/undergoing renewal), offering fashion, miscellaneous goods, cosmetics, restaurants, and more.

  • JR Tower: https://www.jr-tower.com/ (You can find information on the T38 observation deck and various malls here. It seems to be multilingual too.)

You can find almost anything here, so it’s perfect not only for souvenir hunting but also when you need to pick up something you forgot for your trip or want to find something a little special. Many shops offer tax-free shopping, which is a particularly nice perk for international tourists.

Personally, since the increase in inbound tourism, this area tends to get a bit too crowded for my liking, so I sometimes steer clear. It just goes to show how attractive the place is, but if you’re looking for a spot to really “relax and unwind,” another location might be better for you.

A Foodie Paradise: Sapporo Station’s Culinary Delights

Sapporo Station and its surroundings are aグルメ天国 (gourmet heaven) where all of Hokkaido’s delicious foods gather. Ramen, Genghis Khan (Mongolian barbecue), sushi, seafood rice bowls, soup curry… it’s no exaggeration to say you can taste almost all of Hokkaido’s representative dishes right around the station.

With numerous restaurants in JR Tower’s restaurant floors, within the station premises, and in the surrounding buildings, you’ll be spoiled for choice. There used to be a facility called “Sapporo Ramen Republic” in JR Tower, which brought together famous ramen shops from all over Hokkaido, but it closed in August 2023. Many people were sad to see it go, but don’t worry, there are still plenty of delicious ramen shops around Sapporo Station.

More Than Just a Station: Exploring Sapporo Station Itself

Sapporo Station itself has plenty to see, making it worth more than just passing through.

  • Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza: This open plaza is a popular meeting spot. It’s also known for a popular TV talk show that broadcasts live from here in the evenings. In winter, the illuminations are beautiful, and small events are sometimes held here.
  • JR Tower Observatory T38 (Tower Three Eight): This observation deck, 160 meters above ground, offers a 360-degree view of Sapporo. The daytime view is splendid, but the night view is particularly romantic and highly recommended. Admission fees and opening hours can change, so please be sure to check official sources for the latest information before you go.
  • Sapporo Cinema Frontier in Stellar Place: A multiplex cinema where you can enjoy the latest movies. It might be a good option if you have some free time during your trip or for a rainy-day plan.

Inside the station, you’ll also find shops selling Hokkaido crafts and spaces displaying small art pieces, so it’s fun to explore if you have some extra time.

A Little Heads-Up?

Sapporo Station is really big, and you might get a little lost, especially if it’s your first time. The underground network, in particular, can be disorienting if you’re not used to it. However, the signage is clear, and there are information counters, so if you’re in a bind, don’t hesitate to ask a station attendant or staff member. They should be happy to help you out.

So, what did you think? Did I manage to convey that Sapporo Station is more than just a station? It’s not only convenient as a transportation hub but also a truly attractive place where you can enjoy shopping, dining, and even a bit of entertainment.
